5G is the next big thing for the mobile networks, and so it would make sense that Apple would be testing for the network technology well ahead of time.

According to a report from Business Insider, Apple has gone through the steps necessary to begin testing 5G wireless network technology in the state of California. Specifically, in two locations: One near its 1 Infinite Loop headquarters, and the other in Milpitas, California. In both cases, Apple will be testing “millimeter wave” 5G wireless technology:

“Apple Inc. seeks to assess cellular link performance in direct path and multipath environments between base station transmitters and receivers using this spectrum. These assessments will provide engineering data relevant to the operation of devices on wireless carriers’ future 5G networks,” Apple wrote in its application.”
